When it comes to choosing the right wallpaper, understanding the material can make all the difference. With our recent launch of removable wallpaper, we wanted to break down the difference between our standard clay coated paper and the new removable ground. At first glance, the two may look similar, but they differ in structure, installation, and overall functionality. Whether you’re looking for a temporary style or planning a more permanent transformation, understanding these differences will help you choose the right material for your space. See below for a side-by-side comparison of the two grounds.
Clay Coated
Our clay coated wallpaper is a classic for a reason. It features a traditional paper texture and a matte finish that minimizes glare—perfect for creating a soft, polished look in spaces like bedrooms, nurseries, home offices, and living rooms. This style is sold by the linear yard on a continuous bolt and arrives untrimmed, giving installers more control when matching patterns and trimming seams. It’s not pre-pasted, so you’ll need to apply paste, but the result is durable and long-lasting. Removal requires a little extra effort (think: score, sponge, peel), but it’s worth it for the timeless, elevated feel this wallpaper brings.
Beyond aesthetics, our clay coated wallpaper is as planet-friendly as it is beautiful. It’s printed in the U.S. with water-based, low-VOC inks, contains no PVC or PFAS, and is FSC certified to ensure responsible forest practices.
Removable
Looking for a renter friendly option? Our removable wallpaper collection is made for changing spaces and evolving tastes. This style comes pre-trimmed and arrives in 10ft high panels, not on a continuous bolt. The back is pre-pasted with a water-activated adhesive (no peel-and-stick here), so you just wet the back and apply—no mess, no stress. And when you’re ready for a change, it peels off cleanly without damaging your walls.
It has a smooth matte finish and is made from 100% post-consumer recycled content, and is produced in a carbon-neutral, wind-powered facility. Like our clay coated wallpaper, it’s also FSC certified and Class A Fire-Rated.
The Bottom Line
Clay coated and removable wallpapers are designed with different needs in mind. If you’re looking for a traditional, longer-term application, clay coated is a great choice. For a temporary, renter-friendly option that can be easily stripped without damage, removable is the way to go. Still undecided? Email us at hello@pepper-home.com and we can help answer any questions.
