Designing A Timeless Nursery

The Thread Tips & Inspiration September 2022

When it comes time to start designing a nursery for your little one, it’s easy to get caught up in all of the adorable decor pieces associated with the newborn stage. But as enjoyable as it can be to decorate a space catered to a baby, keep in mind that your child will grow into their toddler years before you know it! You’ll appreciate being able to repurpose as many decorative pieces as possible, investing your time and money in creating a space that will continue to charm your child as they grow.

01. Choose Designs That Can Grow With Your Child

Opt for patterns that are welcoming and cheerful yet don’t scream “baby.” While whimsical prints are fun, you and your child may quickly tire of an overly specific theme. If you’re drawn to florals, our Blake Rose wallpaper adds playful color without feeling overly youthful. Or, if you like the idea of animal designs but want something more timeless, our Daphne print offers a sophisticated take on the theme.

We make it easy to order wallpaper swatches to review at home before committing—simply select the designs that catch your eye and explore them at your convenience.

02. Coordinate Curtains and Textiles Thoughtfully

When it comes to other nursery textiles such as curtains, decide whether you want to play with pattern or embrace a solid color—this will often depend on your wallpaper choice. You can easily touch upon a general nursery theme in a subtle, elevated way. For instance, if you love the idea of a coastal-inspired nursery, our Suzy Sky curtain is an excellent choice. For a more refined, Parisian feel, consider our Cosmo Velvet curtain.

03. Don’t Forget the Rug

A rug is one of the hardest-working pieces in a nursery—it adds comfort, warmth, and texture while helping to define the space. Look for a durable, easy-to-clean material that can withstand spills, playtime, and plenty of foot traffic.

When it comes to color and pattern, choose something that complements your other textiles while still being forgiving of daily wear. A patterned or textured rug can help conceal minor messes and extend the life of your space’s look.

04. Layer in Personality Over Time

Creating a nursery that’s both playful and timeless is all about choosing quality textiles that will stand the test of time—both in durability and design. As your child grows and begins to express their own style, you can easily layer in smaller decorative touches such as throw pillows, framed art, or fun accessories that reflect their personality.
