It’s not a secret that no well-designed space is complete without the right window treatments. “We think adding drapery is the ultimate finishing touch to a room,” says Jill Litner Kaplan, the founder of Jill Litner Kaplan Interiors. “It adds an important touch of color, texture and pattern that a room needs to feel warm and welcoming.”
As you begin the process of selecting curtains for your home, you may be wondering whether a cotton or linen material is best suited for your space. “Choosing between cotton and linen drapes often comes down to your lifestyle,” shares JoAnna Baum, the founder of JoAnna Baum Interiors. “Both are beautiful, natural materials—it’s about selecting the one that fits your life best and seamlessly enhances your space.” Keep reading to learn more about the factors that pros say to consider when determining whether to opt for cotton or linen in your space.
Consider Climate
One aspect that you will want to consider when deciding between these two fabric types is climate, Baum explains. “Do you live in a warmer climate with lots of sun exposure? Linen might be the better choice since it resists fading and thrives in bright, airy spaces,” she says. On the other hand, those who reside in four-season environments—and/or have pets and kids—may wish to select a cotton curtain fabric, the designer notes, citing it as easier to maintain and better at providing extra insulation.
Determine Your Ideal Vibe
You will also want to consider the desired vibe for the room you’re designing when choosing between cotton and linen fabric. Are you seeking to create a more laid back, high-traffic space or looking to go more formal?
“Cotton is a great choice when thinking of family-friendly rooms focused on comfort,” says Franesca Herro Saour, the founder of Francesca Herro Interiors. “Its less delicate nature makes it perfect for rooms with lots of life,” she adds, noting, “You won’t need to steam it frequently, and it can handle lots of touching.”
That said, maybe you’re looking to design more of a traditional living or dining room and crave something a bit more luxe. “Linen’s elegance is unmatched,” Herro says, explaining that it’s less formal than silk yet still “has beautiful movement.” The designer adds, “It will elevate any room that is trying to strike a chord between livable and sophisticated.”
Weigh the Importance of Texture vs. Pattern
When debating between linen versus cotton curtains, you will want to think about whether you want to make curtain texture or pattern a priority in your space. “If you find beauty in texture and light then [linen] may be a good choice for your room,” says Julie China, the founder of Idea Space Architecture + Design. Linen’s texture can have other benefits, too. “The natural texture of linen creates a relaxed, breathable atmosphere that allows sunlight to gently filter through, enhancing the overall ambiance,” says Megan Pisano, the founder of Megan Pisano Design.
On the other hand, “Cotton is great if you are looking for pattern in your window coverings,” China says. “Because cotton lends itself to a tighter weave, the prints will read well and have a more defined look.”
Ultimately, you cannot go wrong with either type of fabric—designers enjoy working with both—but keeping lifestyle habits top of mind, as pros advise, will set you up for the most success.
