There’s a chill in the air and pumpkins are starting to make their way onto doorsteps around your neighborhood—fall is officially here! While we so often focus on decorating our outdoor spaces for the season, there’s lots that can be done indoors, too. If you’re looking to spruce up your living room in honor of autumn’s arrival, here are a few of our favorite tips.
Layer in Some Velvet
Velvet fabric and chilly weather go hand in hand. While we always love a velvet sofa or armchair, there’s nothing wrong with starting small—a velvet throw pillow or two would look fabulous in any space. Designer Amal Kapen of Amal Kapen Interiors agrees. “A great and easy way to refresh and update your space for a new season is to change out your accessories and pillows,” she says. After all, pillow covers are easy to stash away in a lidded bin or underbed basket when not in use.

Pepper offers velvet fabric in a number of different shades, but we’re particularly partial to colors such as Walnut and Mauve for fall; the hues are reminiscent of the leaves that will soon be on the ground and are just so cozy. Remember, you can always order a fabric swatch for just $3 to examine a specific shade in your home before making any major commitments. Don’t forget that you can add piping to your custom pillow for a little extra flair. “My favorite velvet pillow at the moment is Pepper’s walnut velvet pillow with cosmo piping,” says designer Camila Pavone of Effortless Style Interiors.
Set Out A Few Throw Blankets
Fall is all about cozy evenings on the sofa, and whether you like to spend them curled up with a mystery book or tuning into the big game, you’ll want to keep a throw blanket nearby for extra warmth. Designer Rachael Gendrolis of Penny & Pearl Design likes to opt for blankets in neutral tones. “They make your home inviting so you and your guests will never want to leave,” she says. “Some of my favorite cozy materials to use are velvet, sherpa, boucle and faux fur.”
Swap Out Your Curtains
Why not switch things up in honor of fall? “When transitioning into fall months, the best way to refresh your home is with new plush curtains,” notes designer Maria Palantino of Homebodi Designs. Palantino is drawn to Pepper’s velvet options. Note that Pepper’s curtains can be customized extensively—choose the fabric style and color or pattern that appeals to you, and then opt to personalize your curtains even further by selecting your preferred trim and construction.

Introduce Fall Flowers And Scents
Don’t underestimate the power that small touches like florals and candles can have in making your living space feel more seasonally appropriate. “One easy way to introduce fall is with warmer scented candles that remind you of the season—for me that is putting away my citrus grapefruit candle and bringing in the warm vanilla, or pumpkin spice scented candles,” says Kim Armstrong of Kim Armstrong Interior Design. Armstrong is also all about autumnal plants and bouquets. “These don’t have to be expensive,” she notes. “They can be inexpensive mums that last for weeks but have a high impact on your fall decor.” On a similar note, you can even “shop” your own backyard for beautiful, natural accents. As Palantino states, “Fall foliage and rustic branches to various vases can add a nice finishing touch to any room.”
