If you can’t decide between one of our solid grasscloths and a patterned wallpaper, don’t stress—you can easily enjoy the best of both worlds! After all, grasscloth isn’t meant just for the walls. You can adhere it to the back of a built-in bookshelf, apply it to the ceiling, or create an accent wall in the room of your choice. “I’m such a huge fan of solid grasscloth as an alternative to paint,” says Callie Windle, the founder of Callie Windle Interiors. “If I’ve used a patterned wallpaper in a space, breaking it up with drywall can be jarring, so I’ll turn to another paper to create a more cohesive space.”
Wondering which of our solid grasscloths and patterned options pair best together? Below, interior designers weigh in with their top choices.
Use Blush As An Anchor
“I love how easy Pepper Home makes it to combine different patterns and textures within specific colorways to create layered and interesting spaces,” says Madelaine Mayer, the founder of AD: ROIT. “Take for example the Thatcher Rose collection, which beautifully combines blush and sage.” Mayer likes to start a room with drapery, and imagines pairing the Thatcher Rose curtains with the Blush Sisal grasscloth wallpaper. “Then, repeat the curtain motif with wallpaper inside of closets or built-in bookcases,” she suggests. “One of my favorite strategies is to add some fun and whimsy on the ceiling, and the Hockney Moss wallpaper complements the scheme perfectly.”
Susan Knof is also a fan of the Blush Sisal grasscloth wallpaper. “Pairing patterned and solid wallpapers are a great way to break down a room from feeling overpowered by a bold pattern,” says the founder of KNOF Design. “One clever and creative way to do this is to use a solid paper like a grasscloth in focal areas. She envisions the blush hue complementing the Suzy Maroon clay coated wallpaper just perfectly.
Opt for Moody Blue Hues
“I always love to blend patterns and solids in a space that I create,” says Michael Graham-Smith, the founder of Graham-Smith Designs. “For a chic bedroom, I could envision a patterned wallpaper such as the Annabelle Amalfi clay coated wallpaper to cover the walls and, perhaps even the ceiling, depending on how bold my client's style is,” he adds.
To balance things out a bit, Graham-Smith would bring a solid grasscloth into the mix, opting for the Midnight or the Sea Salt sisal to cover the back of a bookshelf in this space. “I can also imagine having built-ins that are painted in a complementary blue, whereby the center of the cabinetry is covered in our winning grasscloth pick to bring in additional color and texture,” he explains.
Deck out the Bed and Bath
Wendy Mauro is also eager to weave Pepper’s grasscloth wallpaper into a bedroom, while using a pattern in the ensuite bathroom. “The Blush grasscloth in a girl’s bedroom paired with the Eden Grey clay coated wallpaper for the bathroom with marble floors and creamy subway shower walls would look modern, playful, and classic,” says the founder of Wendy Mauro Design.
