Cornices and valances are the finishing touch that can instantly elevate a window, adding structure, softness, or a layer of design detail. Whether you’re drawn to the tailored presence of a cornice or the lighter, more flexible feel of a valance, accurate measurements are key to achieving a polished, custom look. This guide walks you through how to choose the right style for your space and measure with confidence—covering width, height, and depth, plus helpful tips to avoid common mistakes along the way.
Determine Style Preference

Cornice:
A cornice is a more structured, high-end option made from fabric-covered upholstered wood panels with batting, giving it a substantial, tailored look.
Valence:
A valance is a lighter-weight alternative, made from fabric wrapped around a dust cover board with no wood. It offers a softer feel and more flexibility in style. Valances are offered in two constructions: Classic and Scalloped.

Measuring for Valences and Cornices
Step 01. Measure Width
Measure width of the window plus surrounding window molding. Add a minimum of 3” to the width you’re mounting over (ie. shade, drapery, etc) to allow for the thickness of materials. Record exact round up to the nearest ½”. The minimum width is 24" and the maximum width is 106".

Step 02. Measure Height
You have the option of choosing 10”, 14” or 18” for the height of the cornice/valance. You want to ensure the height will cover whatever you’re mounting over (window molding, roman shade headrail, drapery rod, etc). General rule of thumb, proportionally, valance height should be ⅕ to ⅙ the total height of the window. If ordering Pepper Home Roman Shades, when the shade is completely raised, the stacking dimensions is 8-16” depending on size and style.
For a scalloped valance, the height is measured to the long point of the scallop. Scallops are 1" tall. The side return height will be 1.5" shorter than the measured height of the valance.

Step 03: Choose Your Depth
You can choose 3.5” or 5.5” for the cornice/valance depth. You want to ensure the depth will cover whatever you’re mounting over (window molding, roman shade headrail, drapery rod, etc). Standard is 3.5”, Deep is 5.5”

Common Mistakes to Avoid
